Flash Gordon 30th Anniversary BluRay

#1 Post by Project-2501 » Thu Sep 09, 2010 8:32 pm

Sad I know but I've now got 3 copies of this film....

Anyway, Flash Ahhh ahhhhhh Gordon has finally been released on BluRay. The classic, camp as a row of tents, 1980 film where the best thing by miles was the sound track has been given the 21st century cleanup and re-release. The Bluray has been released by Optimum who we all know and love.

Anway, the nitty gritty. I took a few pics from my TV to compare. All pics were taken from the same TV using the same Bluray player.

The Bluray is encoded progressively in 1080 lines. The soundtrack is in DTS Master audio 5.1.

Right at the start of the movie at the airfield

Wow! thats a big difference!

Looking good!!

They've left in the awful matting during the first space ship sequence though:

You can see the rectangular matte around the space ship. Its just you can now see it REALLY well :)

All in all this has been a good transfer. This gives me a good feeling that the Ghibli Blurays will be good, assuming they've still got good masters. Optimum are not a bunch of cowboys, thats for sure.

I'd watch Flash Gordon on a dodgy tv so I'm sold. :wnw:

Be great having a new commentary with Brian Blessed reacting to the improved version.

Looks like they've done a great job. Though the spaceship still looks like it belongs in the Flesh Gordon movies. :pop:

There are 2 Flesh Gordon movies. I only found out about them when I saw a trailer for Flesh Gordon and the Cosmic Cheerleaders (aka Flesh Gordon 2) on a VHS copy of King of the Kickboxers years ago.

And yep! :)
