For the sake of fu*k, you need suction cups to change the HDD on an imac. :el:

Used my first proper Windows 8 machine today. Very pretty and slick. Just a total pain in that arse to use if you don't have a touchscreen. It will double or triple your mouse mileage as well as annoy you. Client ordered it by mistake, so is sending it back and getting W7.

Yup, I have to wonder about some of these postive reviews. Maybe they write them on their macs. 8)

Bloody Linux, there's always some bloody thing or other you have to drop to the terminal to get to behave!

Mint 13 is too new and therefore has crap ATI video card drivers for older chipsets and Ubuntu 8.04 is too old and so can't get the buggering wireless to work. The laptop is only 3 years old. :el:

Gah, perhaps Mint 9.

Mint 9 kinda worked, but did require installation from a DVD (how quaint :D ) and the installation of older ATI drivers to stabilise the video, which leaves me wondering if I could install Mint 14 and bodge the drivers.

Also at £25 for the online version, I am quite tempted to get W8pro. Even if it is just for fiddling with.

As a footnote to that, I remember when you refused to move from Win XP too! Although in this case I don't blame you.

A mild case of user stupidity for you, I had to fix a PC yesterday where someone had managed to associate the .lnk file with IE. So every program on the desktop and start menu refused to run. :el:

So I now have a netbook running W8 pro and you know what, I think the engine might be bloody good, pity the steering wheel (to stretch an analogy) is square and only loosely attached. (not)Metro can fuck off and die.

I wasn't sure, but W7 is so damned expensive and M$ don't sell it at all, with modification/ignoring metro I think it will be fine on the netbook. Also to be honest I do need to make sure I that I can use W8 for work.

The desktop is accessible via a tile on metro, there are some programs to W7 skin W8, so you can completely ignore metro.

Winkey + X is useful too, as it gets you to the control panel much quicker.

Only thing is that the £25 offer is Windows 8 Pro upgrade, that doesn't work on a clean install (genius!!!!! what happens when you get a fucked HDD?) unless you follow this page.

http://www.ghacks.net/2012/10/27/window ... -possible/

The netbook did come with Vista but as with a lot of cheaper PCs nowadays, no CDs and no sticker. Cheap bastards.
