Oh c**k.

Unfortunately the fans of Akira won't be seeing a bluray release anytime soon, as Andrew from Beez confirmed that the listing spotted at HMV was an error during the Beez panel at Ayacon, this was also later confirmed by Johann from Manga during the State of the Industry panel.

So the update is there's no update, though I find this line rather disturbing
not likely to go into production before the third quarter of 2010 for a 2011 release

So while most effects movies take about 2 years to make, they expect to make a movie that was supposedly too expensive to make at one point within less time?

Perhaps you all have seen this already? It seems that Manga Entertainment might consider putting Akria out again.
Anime UK News wrote:They are considering re-releasing Akira on DVD & Blu-Ray

Emphasis on might. The question was:
"Any plan to re-license the Akira Movie to DVD and also bring it for the first time to Blu Ray?"

While Manga just twittered back "Maybe!"

Hardly a Paxman like grilling. And I don't see how maybe equals consideration but still I guess there's some [false] hope at least.

I'm surprised there was never an anime series made of the Akira manga. Like the movie just covers the first 2 or 3 books, doesn't it?

I've not watched Akira in years. Strange film, good though.

Nor have I. I've been holding out for watching it again 'til the Blu-Ray was going to be realised. So.... woo hoo.

Of course there is the usual 'which dub is best' arguements going on :)

Its been so long since I saw the original dub I really can't remember.

Well I watched it. First time watching this dub. So was easy to recognise Ichigo, but was Tetsuo voiced by the voice of the wolf who wore the collar in Wolf's Rain? And at one point I thought the voice of the kid in the hover chair was Charlie Brown. :)

Edit: imdb search reveals it was the same voice actor for Hige in Wolf's Rain. But not Charlie Brown
