Being the probably the 1st anime that I actually knowingly watched, I quite fancy getting hold of it.

Having rummaged a fair bit, I get the impression that it's currently unlicensed in this country, is that correct?

If I do find it anywhere, which would be the version to go for? 2 or 1 disc?

I see that the US has a Bluray version coming, so any speculation as to whether it will reach here any time soon?

Damn, there used to be a special edition on play.com. Now gone, unless you go for playtrade.
There was also an uiltimate anime combination, or something, which was a boxsety with Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Ninja Scroll. Missed out on that too.

I have Akira on video, taped off tv, so have been lacking in drive to get it.

Me, I always go for the more discs the better option. Seems a safe bet.

Also I'm sure I read something about 2 different dub versions.

Tis a good film, if a touch stereotypical in places.

Yeah, I've heard about the different dubs, doesn't worry me. I'd watch it sub anyway.

What are you talking about? This film is the archetype, the stereotypes arose from it. :D

Not all stereotypes came FROM Akira ;)

For such an early dub it wasn't THAT bad. Compared to the ADV dub of Battle Angel Alita which makes you want to cut your ears off. Shame too as Amanda Winn played Gally and she was great as Rei. Oh Rei!!

Unfortunately it seems the Manga version of Battle Angel has been lost to the sands of time.

I've only ever seen the one dub - or rather heard.

As long as it has the great music then fine by me.

Very odd movie, but I could watch it for the biker gang scenes alone.

I'm sure Akira was shown on the BEEB. But I have a feeling C4 showed it as well. The early and mid 90's are a long distant and burred memory. I know I've seen it several times on TV.

Wow, old!

There we go, Akira, 1994 on the beeb.

Eeee, I were young then, just started Uni. Ish 8)

Having read that article, I'm a bit gutted that I didn't have satellite then and that I missed half of C4's offering.

You and me both.

http://www.animejin.org.uk/00oldidx.htm

Look at the news section. There is even an article about AD Vision starting a UK office.

http://www.animejin.org.uk/news027.htm

Even in '95 we had Anime on TV.

Jonathan Ross did a little introduction to Akira before it was aired on BBC2 (with the BEEBs own quality subbing job too) if I remember correctly.

This one is probably your best bet if you're looking for R2 DVDs. It's got both the 1988 dub of the film (featuring Cam Clarke as Kaneda) and the remastered film with the 2001 dub (starring bloody Johnny Yong Bosch as Kaneda). The version of Akira with the snazzy black box that you might see lurking about is the 2001 remastered version. Since that film and it's extras are all included in the boxset listed above there's really no need to buy it unless you want to a) look at the nice box art or b) watch the nice box art slowly peel away from the edges. Which it will do within 2 days of purchase.

The problem with all the UK DVDs are that the subtitles are all English HOH so if you can't live with (tyres screech) popping up every five minutes at the start of the film you're probably better off looking into importing a R1 version.

I see a link. Just click on the words "This one"

I have the one in the snazzy black torn cover. I got it second hand. Never realised the Ultimate collection contained the same content. All I ever saw about the Ultimate one was it was just the same movie but 1 has DTS and the other has Dolby :?

You could go for the South Park episode about the trapper keeper or the Robot Chicken episode where Santa goes to Japan.

A little sketchy on detail yet, but HMV have added an Akira bluray to their site. :D
