OK, someone convince me that these are not pointless.

You're looking at £200+ for a reader, then you've got a currently limited range of eBooks to pick from (cos all the readers are slightly different) and then the discount for not having a paper copy is only 10% or so.

So after 150-200 books I break even. OK, I'll stick to paperbacks.

Go to the library, instead. :P

Or read out of copyright works.

My local library (which isn't local any more) is crap.

Mine stocks Alastair Reynolds, manga and Ian Rankin, so I'm happy for the moment. You could always ask for something other than TV tie ins to be stocked.

If you live in Essex or Dublin, you can get ebooks from the library. So I guess eventually that'll roll out to more.

What was wrong with the £169 reader? Those discounts are closer to £4 on hardbacks. I guess once enough bleeding edgers have brought them, it all become more sensibly priced.

The Kindle is supposed to be out soon, maybe that'll be more suited.

One advantage, you can take loads of books on holiday without screwing your luggage allowance.

Don't mention luggage.... came back with half a case full from my trip after uni. My cousin in Aussie gave me a PILE.

I only buy hardbacks if its a collectors edition. Everything else is paperbacks.

See, I told you the Kindle would be out soon. $279 for the international version.

Translates to about €250 including import charges apparently. thought it would be worse.

Guy here has one he got while over in the States. It's a Sony reader and can read .doc and .pdf. Just have to transfer them to the reader using the included program. same way you need to use itunes to copy music to the iPod

For annotations and notes when working with books or for all the internet stuff that every gadget has to provide now. Although I don't think internet stuff works over here yet.

Have a popup keyboard on the screen and reduce the size of the unit.

If worried bout fingerprints, can include a stylus to lose.

I'm sure down the line they'll release a version with a camera in it as every gadget must also provide these days.
