Blu-Ray

Looks like this will be Blu-Ray's year.

I wouldn't buy it, but you can get a no-name player for £50 or a named one for under £100

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/cheap-blu-ray

The discs are coming down to sensible prices (as long as you don't pay RRP) and there will be a fair few anime releases this year.

I know you're going to say "ah but I'd rather be a freetard and download HD for free", but not everyone has a good enough connection (Rural ADSL sucks balls) or the questionable morals. ;)

Some of the cheap players are even BD region crackable! (just read the link, they are here too)

And nothing beats proper HD quality and sound. the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack for some films is larger than the 'HD' freetard download.

Can you tell the difference between DD 5.1 and True HD?

Ah come on, at least two of you have PS3s now, so you're all BDed up too.

Well I don't have any sound apart from what comes directly from the tv.

The 1st bit was more aimed at Project and maybe BT, seeing as I think they've both got 7.1

It most be nice to be getting HD content on your TV now?

Doh, well don't make the mistake of buying a £50 cable "because it gives a clear picture" :el:

It's a digital system, it either works or it doesn't. :ugeek: Unless you need a really long cable

I'm running 5.0 (fronts can do 15Hz) and yes, you CAN tell the difference with the lossless formats. 7.x is for showoffs :)

I saw a totally laughable article about how Chord's new HDMI cable makes the colours better and the sound clearer. :el: But then if you're stupid enough to spend £150 on a 5m cable you will belive anything they say.

You get 5.1 in trueHD or DTS-MA, and if it is in 7.1 my player downmixes. Not all blurays are in 7.1.

Yeah, suckers ;)

I don't have any 7.1 SS native media. It upscales 5.1 to 7.1 though. The one Blu-ray I do own uses all speakers, but I think it's 5.1 mapped to 7.1. Same with stereo, it maps 2 to 7.

Not relevant to Blu-ray:
However most games support 7.1 and you can tell the difference between playing in 5.1 & 7.1. Mainly because the rear speakers and side speakers play their side respectively. Whereas mapping 5.1 to 7.1 you get rear sound coming from side and behind.

I can play .midi files in 7.1. That's quite funny. You can map each "instrument" a position in space and it plays it from there. You can also make them "walk" around.

shock horror!!

Plus TVs seem to be setup very badly from the factory, a bit of tweaking results in a MUCH better picture.

Yeah, they're invariably setup in showroom mode. Mine was so bright it made me feel ill, until I dialled it all right down.
