Well since we can't really ignore it for much longer, I figured a Christmas music related thread could be posted.

Simply what songs do you like and don't annoy as much as the others? Mine are:

Fairytale of New York - Probably the best Christmas song around. Of course has to be the original Pogues and the late Kirsty MacColl version. It's a song that isn't all bright and cheerful about how great Christmas is. And it always has to be played at or near the end of the night in club to get the crowds together. Love it! Of course don't like the Ronan Keating/Maire Brennan version which is like a badly dubbed movie - "You're cheap and you're haggard"?!?

Walking in the Air - Don't know why but I find this song to be a brilliant song to listen to as it's carolly but also pretty mainstream. Again, not all "Wish it could be Christmas every day" crap. And of course reminds me of being a kid and watching The Snowman every Christmas Day. Oddly it doesn't seem to be on this year. O.O

Agree totally on Fairytale. Always quite liked Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses.

Also been really taken with Peter Kay's one. I love the lyrics, as usual he gets it spot on with his observations of people and the way they react to things.

Seeing as I love the Nightmare Before Christmas and the Muppet's Christmas Carol, there's a bunch of songs from those that I love too.

You can blame Gary Barlow for that, he helped write it.

That Cavalry one is good, though the lyrics seem quite grim.

Ah ha! I had suspected that for some time. It did seem a bit good for Kay, song wise, and knew Barlow helped with the Winning song.

I Believe In Father Christmas by Greg Lake is one of my favourites.

It's this nice little guitar and vocals that turns into this top orchestra epic at the end. Rather quite marvellous.

Anybody else realised that the last "decent" Christmas song is Bell's End by The Darkness in 2003, nothing has entered the Xmas playlists since thanks to the wonderful X factor. I'm looking forward to yet another bland ballad at no 1 for Xmas. :argh:

Does X factor also pollute the Irish chart?

I stopped paying attention to the charts a long time ago, but as far as I know it does still pollute them. And we don't even have a say in it since Ireland can't vote for X Factor. so not only do they broadcast that crap to us, but they won't even let the irish choose who they want to continue watching.

I turned on the radio this morning and there was some really crap ballady type song on and I could tell right away it was the x factor song.

I agree with pretty much all of the sentiments in this thread so far. Walking in the Air always gets me; makes me think of David Bowie walking about in a scarf on the VHS of The Snowman and me crying at the end of it. Just to add my own particular favourites though.

Black Snow - Ten Benson It's tongue in cheek and ridiculously grimy sounding for a Christmas song. And that's why it's great.

I adore Just Like Christmas by Low too. Mark and Lard used to play it all the time around this time of year so it always gives me that nice melancholy Christmas feeling.

Nothing beats the seasonal joy of The Vandals' Oi to the World though. Featuring such hits as My First Christmas as a Woman and the heart warming Christmas Time For My Penis. Good times had by all.

As I said, Pogues and Kirsty
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCr30OVMjHA
and the cover by Dustin and Dervla
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojkWTseLkq0

Walking in the Air
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR1Ln-ctn5E
and cover by Nightwish
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaWPduHl_j8

And I will admit I like A Spaceman Came Travelling
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hgQEPSXO3I

Heard this for the first time on Friday. Can't find the version I heard but here's Christmas 1915 for a real depressing song about the temporary truce that took place in No Man's Land during World War 1

I wish this would actually work, but it won't.

They're neck and neck without the x factor trash even being in the shops yet. And we all know that Granny will only buy a physical copy. :shifty:

They tried it last year with Jeff Buckley. Though that was partially messed up by a lesser campaign for Leonard Cohen.

Snow is good for something then! It kept all the grannies hidden at home for fear of falling over instead of out buying CD copies of Bleurgh factor.
