Just over half a decade on from when I started collecting it, I'm finally a little closer to finishing GTO having just ploughed through vol. 17 and 18 this week.

It's generic as hell (Onizuka meets a bad pupil -> bad pupil hates Onizuka -> Onizuka puts life on the line for mouthy pupil -> pupil has new found love for education) but it's still great fun to read.

Battle Angel Alita: Last Order - Vol 11

One day this series will end, and it will be a sad day. Now I have to wait for vol 12!

I'm not.

However I did spot that my local library had a copy of Jinki Extend and after further research that it's got Welcome to the NHK Vols 2-4, but not 1.

So check out the online catalogue for your local library, you never know.

Well they have a couple I wanna read, which are based on movies. 3 Volumes of Return to the Labyrinth and 1 volume of Legends of The Dark Crystal.

So how are you meant to read them. When they appear 2 pages at a time. Do you read the left page first, then read the panels right to left? I know with the ones you buy, they have to be read back to front, right to left.

Battle Angel Alita: Last Order vol12

OK, I think Yukito Kishiro has lost the plot. The story is now starting to drag on a bit too long. Will he manage to wrap up the story or will it start to drag on and on for ever.

Up to the 4th volume of the The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. It's good stuff; very different to other stuff I've read.

Slightly disturbed at how I can look at a double spread of a decomposing suicide victim and be impressed by how pretty it looks, but them's the breaks.

Descending like a vulture upon carrion I snatched up a few cheap(ish) volumes in the Borders liquidation sale today. There are plenty of other places in This Town to get manga (2 Waterstones and 1 Forbidden Planet no less) but I'm a sucker for that 20% off deal, even if it is off extortionately priced manga.

I immediately regretted my choice though after discovering some helpful shopkeep had stuck the magnetic security strip in the middle of my new copy of Strawberry Marshmallow. IN THE FUCKING MIDDLE! OVER THE TOP OF A SPEECH BUBBLE AND HALF OF MIU'S FACE! I wonder, if you buy a DVD from them do they drill a hole through it before handing it to you? Hey, there's a Costa in Borders too. Maybe they take a shit in your coffee before pouring it into your stupid, sneaky customer face, I don't know.

Long story short: Jesus is punishing me for attempting to cash in on the sorrorws of hundreds of CSRs. The man behind the counter was also very pleasant and losing his job so I'm not taking the book back to complain. Because I'm not a bastard and I'm not going to be that customer. And anyone who's ever worked in customer service will know who that customer is.

Anyways, I picked up vol 2 of Strawberry Marshmallow (still awesomely cute), FMA vol 2 (still ugly as sin but a rolicking good action adventure) and 20th Century Boys vol. 1 which I've been looking forward to for ages.

A little reading matter for anyone interested in the manga and it's translation.

The example he gave seemed unkind. The term Bitch can be more than just crudely misogynistic.

That said, I haven't read the manga in question, so pinch of salt and all that.

Hmm, not so sure about that, it's a crude term to use in most contexts.

Did you read the comments? They add a fair bit to his rant.

Crude certainly, but calling someone a stupid bitch is surely the feminine of 'you dumb bastard'. It’s probably something you’d have to see in context, which I haven’t, so I’m probably wrong. Just seemed something of an odd example to choose to illustrate the point.

I certainly agree with his point, it must be said. I'd actually prefer it if translators took liberties with the original script to give it more of an English flavour. From reading various forums however, I suspect I'm the minority on that.

(I avoided the comments first time round, cheers.)

As an addendum, I originally found it reading Jonathan Clements blog. Which again has a couple of interesting follow up comments by him about translation.
