It seems that Marvel Comics and Madhouse (of Death Note, Metropolis and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time fame) are teaming up to produce four anime series' based on four different comic characters. Specifically Wolverine, Iron Man and two others which are still unnamed (I'd guess Spiderman will be one of others to be named later since he's probably on of the most well known comic book characters). Warren Ellis is writing them.

Yeah the SDCC is on next week where they'll talk about them. I'd say other possible candidates are Hulk, Deadpool(since getting a lot about him lately) or The Punisher to go for a darker direction.

Well Ellis is excellent so that's something to hope in.

Course, could start a heated discussion about whether it is really anime or not. :shifty:

Two trailers for Wolverine and Iron Man. Iron Man looks cool, Wolverine less so (and he barely looks even recognizable). Havn't heard what the other two are going to be yet.

So for Iron Man the only relevance it seems to have is the fact it's a guy in an Iron Man suit. And for Wolverine it's just a guy with claws similar to Logan's Wolverine.

Sooo, it's very possible I am going to have other nerds biting my head off about this, buuuut, I actually like the look of Wolverine, I'd watch it. Don't get me wrong though, I think it is just another example of them making something really good, but foolishly calling it something other nerds will flock to due to an already developed fan-base, personally, I like it, but I think it would have been better if they hadn't called it wolverine just to reel in nerds. I mean seriously, it's not like marvel has cornered the market on sexy guys with steel coming out of his hands. I think it is just another sad example of people trying to push merchandising rather than story and art concept. I mean it has both, but they are niching it into an over and overdone comic niche. I just think that is sad. As for Iron-man, I think that will be a roving pile of tripe because there is no originality in it. Although I do have to give the artist credit, I enjoy the comic meets anime style of the faces. The woman's face was like a combination of Russian femme fatale from a comic book meets pretty villainess from an anime. It is stylized enough to be anime but realistic enough to be intriguing, I like that. I hope to see more of that, I just hope it all doesn't have to come at the high price tag of crappy classic comic book remakes.

*Sigh* I guess that is just too much to hope though.

What are you on about? Marvel and Madhouse came together to make these, and they getting Warren Ellis,to write them. It's not like 4Kids where the title, music, characters and plot points are changed in order to appeal to kids/generate easily brand recognisable goods. This was not Anime X being recut and rewritten to look like Weapon X.

As for the point that:
I think it is just another sad example of people trying to push merchandising rather than story and art concept.
Well so what? It's a company which wants to make money (which until the recent recession was the norm), merchandising helps in that regard. But you can’t compare this to the toys, lunchboxes, badly made computer games and children’s Halloween costumes which gets churned out by Hasbro or Mattel on behalf of Marvel, DC or whoever else. It has a story hence it‘s not just merchandising (if the stories are any good is yet to be judged).

but they are niching it into an over and overdone comic niche.

Enlighten me, what do you mean by this?

According to ANN, the other ones will be The Punisher, X-Men and Planet Hulk. Don't really know about the last one since I read that that was the planned Marvel animated movie release after Thor, so we'll see. Maybe they decide to go this route to have Hulk included.

I didn't hear about The Punisher, I read Blade was going to be one of the other series'.

Today from Warren Ellis himself:
This is the test animation for the IRON MAN anime series I’m writing, produced for the south east Asian market. Note test animation: it’s intended to show off the style of the piece only. Nothing in here reflects the actual content, just the design and the aesthetic and the animation.

Wolverine seems to be the same.

Yeah I meant Blade. Knew it was one of the more violent characters. :)

New trailer for the Iron Man anime.

And ANN's thoughts on the first episode:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/convent ... mpressions

They don't exactly seem to be blown away by it.
As first episodes go, it's stable, halfway pretty, and disappointingly by-the-book

It's been 18 months since the first trailer for the Wolverine anime and finally some screencaps of the show itself have been leaked.

At least he looks somewhat recognisable now.
