Metropolis the review?

#1 Post by kodama » Sat Mar 28, 2009 10:53 pm

This comes in two halves.

First the good stuff:

The animation is stunning, the 3D and 2D integration is some of the best I've seen. No corners were cut here.

The sound track is fantastic, it flows together and the surround sound is used well.

I enjoyed the story, it's a well trodden track but nicely done and not at all heavy handed.

Second the (not too) bad stuff:

I have the feeling they either spent too much on the some of the opening visuals or someone decided that it had to be exactly the length that it was and no longer. I shall explain in spoilers.

Prime Bbcode Spoiler Show Prime Bbcode Spoiler:
There are a couple of minor plot points that are missing:

How come they are suddenly calling the ALBERT, Fi Fi, I imagine it came from the noise he made, but the name just appeared out of nowhere.

They go from hiding from Duke Red's henchmen to meeting Atlas the Revolutionary with nothing in between. It's not a show stopper, but it does leave you with a sense of Huh?

I quite liked it too. Loved the end explosion with the music. Would seem an odd fit but really worked.
Loved watching it. It was brilliant to see.

Think favourite stuff was with the two cops- the human and the robot. Made you care when the robot stands up to the mob, and the whole uprising was done well, showing different sides. Atlas was a kind of hero, and yet his side did a lot of damage.

I said it before but the end explosion with Ray Charles' I Can't Stop Loving You is excellent.

It's been ages since I've seen it so can't remember that kind of thing. But I do remember a sense of huh at times.
