Tokko - Half a review for half a series!

One of those 'not so bargin' bargin series I bought a while ago. Play had it listed as 5 discs when I paid £28 for it... its actually 3 discs as the series was never finished. Its now £14 so somewhat better value.

Anyway, the series is set around a young lad called Ranmaru and his sister Saya, and Ranmaru's quest to discover who killed his parents and pretty much everyone else in his apartment complex and get revenge. Along the way you've got gateways to other worlds, demons, police corruption, secret agencies, people with very large swords, blood and guts EVERYWHERE, lots of swearing and girls with big boobies.

Soon after joining the police force Ranmaru discovers Tokko, a 'secret' part of the police who are trying to kill the demons who killed his parents. (and where he meets the previously mentioned girls with big boobies) And his life goes to crap from there.

When I started watching I thought 'oh crap, someone trying to clone Bleuch!' (you'll see why if you watch it) but it turned out to be quite good. The story holds together and almost gets to a reasonable ending before the series ends. IMO a good balance between 'everything ends up just hunky-dory' and 'everyone dies and you want to top yourself' with a few good twists. A shame it didn't continue for another 13 eps!

The ending is taken straight from Flash Gordon, it ends with the bad guy's manic laughter. All it needed was the caption 'The end?' and for Queen to start playing :)

The animation is nicely done, looks mostly CG but its been done well however the use of dramatic static zoom or pan shots is quite evident.

The dub has been done well although some of the female characters are a little 'valley girl', for sure, like gag me with a spoon! For all the dub haters there is no point switching to the subs as this is one of Manga Ents wonderful dubtitle efforts. YAY! The budget to master the DVDs was so high they even put the SAME 6 trailers on all 3 discs.

So in conclusion, Tokko gets: :cat: :cat: :cat: :cat:

If you're after a slightly more adult short series thats takes itself quite seriously then buy Tokko! If you don't like dubs and hate dubtitles then avoid.

I too enjoyed it, and it was a shame it was never finished.

Why did you buy it in the 1st place if it was incomplete?

Most Anime adaptations are never completed though and there are plenty of incomplete series out there that are well worth owning too. Tokko isn't one of them.
