I never bothered to talk like a pirate cause i thought that maybe pirates probably didn't talk like that
or at least not all of them, maybe just one did and the rest just took the piss

and the fact that I'm a robot.. :cat:

Out of interest, how come all pirates are from the Westcountry?
That's blatant typecasting. I'm sure there were scouse pirates too. :P

As I understand it, the pirate accent as we know it, and I use that term loosely as it is pretty much standard pirate movie talk, comes from how people knew/believed Edward Teach, Blackbeard, spoke.
That or something about Long John Silver. Anyway, it has basically become the pirate way of talking.

Blame Hollywood. Usually their fault

It was the guy who played Long John Silver in the first "with sound" adaptation of "Treasure Island". Before that, no one thought that pirates spoke with Arrs and so on.

In fact, many pirates would probably have been quite civilized. Queen Elizabeth the first had a fleet of pirate vessels that had to give 90% or so of their spoil to her, and they could keep the rest.

*imagines a pirate ship being full of stereotypical posh brits*
'Shiver my timbers Geoffrey, I can imagine that that ship over there has a large quanitity of booty'
'Yes...quite *sips tea*'

Now that's a plot twist.
