Not quite, the word you're looking for is Privateer. Essentially a licensed pirate

That's it, Crucifer! Knew it was a movie and down to one person, just assumed it was Teach, what with him being all Bristol like.

Well, one man's privateer is another man's pirate.

I think the main difference was if you robbed and attacked when at war with the opposition, it was legal. When the war was over, you kept doing it, only then you were a very naughty boy. :Arr:

Also they could be quite proffesional and democratic. Everyone had shares dished out and captains could be voted out if they didn't keep their crew happy.

I think it was more "If we do it, it's legal. If they do it, it's not..."

That's exactly what it was. A good example would be Frances Drake. He was a hero in Elizabethan England but was in reality he was a pirate who raided Spanish ships.

No, that's not it. Like Mr K pointed out, if at war then you were allowed - you would even have a contract saying that you were raiding on behalf of your government, and you raided the enemy, no one else.

It was a fine line walked between piracy and privateering, but there was a line.

I concede that legally there was a difference between the two, but in real life the only real difference between piracy and privateering was the commission got from a government. I'm sure that anyone who suffered at the hands of such people wouldn't have cared for the distinction.
